How to Measure Fabric for Your Headliner (The Right Way)

Getting the right amount of headliner fabric before you start your project is one of the most important steps — and one of the most commonly skipped. Order too little and you're stuck waiting for a second shipment mid-project. Order too much and you've wasted money. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your vehicle's headliner so you get it right the first time.

What You'll Need

• A flexible measuring tape
• Pen and paper (or your phone's notes app)
• A helper (optional but useful for larger vehicles)

Step 1: Understand How Headliner Fabric Is Sold

Headliner fabric is typically sold by the yard, measured along the length of the roll. Our fabric is 60 inches (5 feet) wide, so your primary measurement concern is the length you need to cover your roof from front to back.

Most passenger cars require between 2 and 3 yards. Larger vehicles like SUVs, vans, and trucks often need 3–5 yards. Always add a buffer — we recommend at least 6–12 inches of extra length on each end for trimming and tucking.

Step 2: Measure the Length of Your Headliner

With the headliner board still in the vehicle (or removed and laid flat), measure from the front edge to the rear edge along the centerline of the roof. This is your base length measurement.

Example: If your headliner board measures 58 inches front to back, you'll want at least 70–72 inches of fabric (58 inches + 6–7 inches on each end for overlap).

Convert to yards: 72 inches ÷ 36 = 2 yards.

Step 3: Check the Width

Measure the widest point of your headliner board. If it's under 60 inches, our standard 60-inch wide fabric will cover it in a single panel — no seams needed. If your vehicle is wider than 60 inches at any point (rare, but possible in full-size vans), you'll need to plan for a seam or source wider material.

Step 4: Account for Curves and Contours

Modern vehicles have curved rooflines, sunroof cutouts, and contoured edges. Fabric needs to stretch and wrap around these features. If your vehicle has significant curves or a panoramic sunroof, add an extra half-yard to your order to give yourself room to work.

Step 5: Calculate Your Final Order

Use this simple formula:

(Front-to-back measurement in inches + 12–14 inches buffer) ÷ 36 = yards needed

Round up to the nearest half-yard. It's always better to have a little extra than to run short.

• Compact/Sedan: 2–2.5 yards
• Mid-size Sedan or Coupe: 2.5–3 yards
• SUV or Crossover: 3–4 yards
• Full-size Van or Truck Cab: 4–5 yards

What About Adhesive?

Once you have your fabric, you'll need a quality headliner adhesive to bond it to the board. We recommend DAP Weldwood Landau Top and Trim Adhesive — it's a professional-grade contact cement that bonds firmly to foam-backed fabric and withstands the heat cycles inside a vehicle cabin.

For most passenger cars, a 1-gallon can is sufficient for a full headliner replacement with material left over for future repairs.
